Lash Extension results.

Rapid Lash Results.

Lashes, lashes.

This has been a hot topic at HUSH. We have been going to many events and we also did a fashion shoot last week and used fake lashes. The result: an amazing look! So, the question came about. How can we have beautiful lashes and get this look all the time? We decided to experiment with a few options and wanted to share the results (and the fun)!

Option 1.
Cosmetic lashes that are great for a photoshoot, an event, or an evening out. They cost about 15-30 dollars, plus glue. They are fairly easy to put on with a steady hand and tweezers and have a great effect for a night or day! Try them if you haven't already, it is worth it!

Option 2.
Rapid Lash
This product promises to improve the condition of your lashes and brows. How? You must apply every day for 4-6 weeks. A small investment of $50.00 for this one. Thea tested these for us, and you can see the results actually are as they say! She applied every day for a month.

Option 3.
Eyelash Extensions! This one was my personal option. Fake lashes that last for more then a day! I had to try it. And so, I went in and gave it a chance. It took about 45 minutes to put the first set on, and cost 60.00. The look is one born with fabulous lashes and one single coat of mascara. No one can tell they are not your own, and you don't need to wear makeup. Brilliant! No clumping, easy to care for. How it works? These synthetic lashes are individually bonded to your own using special adhesive. About 55-60 each eye are put on. A few will eventually grow out with your natural lashes in 4-6 weeks, and will need to be replaced. A fill will cost less and be quicker. I am on one week now and loving every minute of them.
Stay tuned or stop by to see them!

HUSH photo shoot Spring 2010
Behind the Lens!

After working as a stylist for photo shoots and fashion events for over a year now, I have become very comfortable behind the scenes putting looks together to achieve that perfect shot. Last Thursday I looked at things from a whole new perspective - from in front of the lens. Yes, ladies, I was somehow convinced that I should ‘model’ for a photo shoot.

My business partner Angie, has professional training and experience modeling for the camera. I have extensive experience working as her stylist. I’m not really sure how she did it, but she charmed me into not only selecting the clothes for the shoot, but also having my picture taken wearing them.

Wait a minute. I do know what cinched the deal – enter professional make up artist Kate. Kate Evans is an up – and – coming Ottawa make up artist who was kind enough to donate her services for our shoot. What can I say? I’m a sucker for a make over. Who isn’t!?! As it turns out, Kate absolutely lived up to all my excitement and gave me some FANTASTIC make up looks. Truly, some of the best I’ve seen!

The photographer was our talented friend, Natalie, from NDS photography (ndsphotography.com). We had high hopes of taking several different looks as well as getting some great stock photographs we could use for promos so as not to bore you guys with the same ol’ pics all the time!

Natalie came with some serious gear for our set; backdrop, lighting and all kinds of intimidating lenses. Sitting having my makeup done, whilst listening to the click, click, click of the camera shutter was a very Hollywood moment. It ended very quickly when I stepped on to set. I did my best to remember all the great things I learned from watching many seasons of America’s Next Top Model. Nuhtin’ doin! I had no hope in heck of coming close to a million dollar shot!

Thankfully Ang took over with many more looks and poses. She and Nat have a natural chemistry that allowed us to achieve our goal and stock up on all kinds of great pics you’ll be seeing over the next few months. I am happy I tried something new (it’s always character building to try something outside your comfort zone) but worry not Halle Berry, I am not after your job. I’ll stick to where I like it best, where the grass is definitely greener – behind the lens!

Full of excitement I drove along the parkway as the beaming flood lights beckoned. The Ottawa Gala is an evening to raise money for a great charity – the Fund for a New Generation. Also known as. the ‘Young Professional's Prom' is far and away my favourite party of the year.

The venue: the Ottawa Conference Centre – AMAZING; The perfect backdrop for a swanky soiree. There is no other place in the city that has such a magical 'out of conservative Ottawa' effect.

The theme - The French Quarter was a good one; so original. It also gave people the excuse to don masquerade wear, the most popular being masks, although there were actually some really good costumes as well. There were also several people who were dressed, unintentionally, in what looked like costumes. Last year's theme, Red Carpet, was impossible to misunderstand. Guests arrived in gowns and gloves as they should have. This year, the more flexible dress code allowed for more fashion flops. Most notable: the semi formal scruff (rumpled shirt with jeans and cord blazer NOT okay), and the tube dress.

I have to take a minute to explore the issue I have with these strapless mini tensor bandages that have become a fashion staple for night and for day. I understand that gala’s and other parties are a night to strut your stuff, but ladies please understand, your body has to be at least a nine out of ten (we're talking religious workouts, buns of steel and washboard abs) otherwise this tight fitting garment will betray you and highlight every single minute flaw you. If you are blessed with ideal measurements, this style of dress is still risky as there are so many other women wearing them you most likely just get lost in the crowd - a definite fashion don’t! Don’t be fooled, these ‘tube dresses’ are one precarious step away from Spanx, which are designed to be worn as underpinnings to flatter your figure. There were some who managed to successfully work this look, and work it well using colour, accessories and pleated details. To those I say ‘You go girl!”

The evening was the same format as last year. Although it is a winning formula, I fear that it may be suffering from too many repeats like one of our favourite cassettes from the 1980’s (yes, I know I am dating myself). There was something missing, that vibe, and I fear that it may be time for the Gala organizers to mix things up as they seem to be getting a little stale.

Just when things felt like they were slowing down, DJ Select started spinning and turned the night around. Within minutes the dance floor went from boring to bumpin! My gold sequined tube top was a hands-down success in the style department but a perilous brush with wardrobe malfunction as I grooved to the beat. Take it from me, double sided tape is no insurance! The volume and the energy went up about 50 decibels! It was so powerful, it felt like the dance beat replaced your heartbeat and that is the high that guaranteed with admission and the reason I will absolutely go again next year.

This weekend promises to be sweet but not only because of the visit from the Easter bunny. Sunny skies and breezy days are headed our way! The hot weather brings out the best in all of us except maybe when it comes to what to wear. In fashion there are rules we do our best to follow. But with any good rule, there is an even better exception and this extra early arrival of a heat wave is one of them.

Is it too soon to wear white? Yes it is a little too early for white but never too early for colour! Wear, yellow, green, red, pink, blue, red, purple or orange. Wear anything that isn't black, grey, or brown. Rather than the safe dark hues we have been wearing all winter, mix and match in a few pieces in bright colours - they look amazing in the sun.

Bottom half. Once temps move into the double digits, dressing can become twice as complicated. Not sure if you need to wear tights? Skip the question and opt for a Capri pant. Long enough to give you coverage but short enough to keep you cool, paired with a heel capris are the perfect transition piece. Choose cotton blends in favour of wool or lined.

Boots out shoes in. It's time to retire your heavier winter footwear in favour of lighter happier toes. Most likely your sandals are buried in a box you didn't expect to need for another month or two. Dig 'em out! Pick out a pretty pair and show of your pedicure!

Truly there is nothing like the feeling of the warm sum on your bare skin. On the first really hot weekend it'
s tempting to take it all off. Don't do it! Fight the power of the sun! After being completely bundled up for many long months, tube tops, flip flops and cut off jeans are calling you. Please don't rush the season! Exercise restraint by opting for moderate coverage. Strapless sundress - sure! Just cover up with a preppy cardigan. Tube tops - too soon! Graphic tees are a better pick. Short pants, no problem so long as they come to the knee. There is no doubt that an early summer weekend is a gift so make sure to get out and enjoy!
