HUSH Spotlight: Michelle Vandentillaart
We have carried her line for only a couple months and already we are overwhelmed by the positive response she has received!
The Vandentillaart line combines both style and comfort. Each piece is one-of-a-kind and Michelle shops in Montreal to buy the most unique and comfortable fabrics. Michelle stops into HUSH often to restock the store with tops, sweaters and dresses! Her latest addition is a new line of scarves that we are all raving about because not only are they infinity scarves (which we love!) but they also have a hood to keep you extra warm and cozy!!

It goes without saying that you have a shopping list and a shopping budget. And of course you have a closet full of clothes. Obviously wearing the same dresses from last year is not an option (thanks Facebook!). So what to do? Easy, bring your pieces to HUSH. That’s right! You loved it, you wore it and you looked spectacular. But this year, it just won’t do. Bring it to HUSH! Sell your pieces from last year to create a budget for this year! Collect all of your dresses, flirty skirts, dressy tops, and sexy heels. You know won’t wear them again so there is no sense it letting them take up valuable space in your closet. Put them to work earning you all new looks for this season!

Essentially, caring for your boots is a dirty and tedious job that I would say is best left to the professionals. Normally I am a total do-it-yourselfer, but the “How to List” for caring for leather and suede boots is a mile long and involves a long and arduous process that would take away from valuable fashion time (i.e. shopping, organizing your wardrobe, reading fashion magazines…) I have created my own condensed version that will help you protect your boots and your manicure!
1) Unpack boots from seasonal storage.
2) Wipe off boots with soft cloth.
3) Assess boots for damage. Check soles, heels and toes.
4) Take boots to shoemaker! Have them weatherproofed. Have broken heels fixed and thinned soles replaced.
5) Maintain boots for remainder of season. Here’s how:
a. Leather: Remove dirt or salt as it happens. When necessary use a half water half vinegar solution. Apply with a soft cloth. When dry, reapply leather protector spray.
b. Suede: Use a nylon bristle brush for suede boots to remove salt or other stains. The vinegar/water solution will also work on suede for removing tough salt streaks.
c. Pleather: Although I am not a great fan of this synthetic ‘faux leather’, it has sadly become the ‘norm’ in franchise footwear. Apparently a great product for cleaning this imposter is saddle soap (available in the shoe care aisle). It contains lanolin which helps to moisturize.
6) Make sure to protect them. Pick up a few good sprays and use throughout the season.
There is no greater fashion faux pas than dirty un-kept boots. Okay, that may be a slight exaggeration (which anyone who knows me knows I’m prone to) but salt stained, off kilter dirty boots are an absolute NO-NO! Make sure to leave room in your budget for boot maintenance. It’s worth the investment!

All of the HUSH girls made it out to Ottawa Fashion Week and loved it! The organizers pulled out all the stops this year! There was a great line-up of designers, the venue was absolutely stunning and the clothes were to die for! It was enough to help us day dream through the winter in anticipation of all the gorgeous spring trends that await us! Some of our favourite parts of the weekend include getting amazing front row seats, watching the Kania models and designer, Stacey Martin, not only strutting but dancing down the catwalk and finally having the chance to meet some of the amazing designers backstage! We are feeling a little sad that all of the excitement is over so we would love it if you come by HUSH and chat with us about your favourite parts, clothes and designers!

You may recognize Jessica Biffi from the second season of Project Runway Canada, but that was just a jumping off point for this talented designer. We are all very excited to have Jessica Biffi back at Ottawa Fashion Week this year! Her collections never fail to disappoint with bright colours and a slight flair for the dramatic! She is a force to be noticed, and has a new and innovative perspective.
Clean lines, eye catching details and fit are key elements of the Jessica Biffi Brand. Interesting mixes of fabrics bring an unexpected touch to structure and body conscience pieces. Sex appeal and confidence merge in quality materials and craftsmanship.
Jessica Biffi will be the grand finale show for Ottawa Fashion Week, so make sure you come check out her show this Sunday at 9pm!

We can’t believe that Ottawa Fashion Week is already less than a week away!!! Given this years gorgeous venue and amazing designers we expect it to be bigger and better than before! This year HUSH is sponsoring and our very own Alison Hughes has been asked to be Head Stylist for the event. We are starting our countdown and getting giddy with excitement!! If you haven’t purchased your tickets yet, day passes are $30 and weekend passes are only $40! Also don’t forget that if you buy your tickets before October 27th, you will automatically be entered to win 1 of 3 fabulous grand prizes. So don’t delay!
Yesterday all of the Fashion Week models were fitted to get ready for the show. It was a long busy day and now that its all over it got us thinking, what are we going to wear? Black always seems like the obvious choice but there are so many gorgeous colours this season that it seems like its time to add some pops of colour to our black New Yorker imitation outfits. Blues, reds, purples and even the more neutral camel that’s been so hot this fall, can all add interesting details. Add a bright red purse or scarf to your LBD to spice it up. This is also the perfect opportunity to whip out those hot shoes you bought on a whim but have had nowhere to wear! We can’t wait to get our weekend passes, pick out some Carrie Bradshaw inspired Fashion Show worthy outfits and strut our stuff all weekend long!! Hope to see all of you there!

Ottawa Fashion Week, We're So Excited!!
1 - Ottawa Fashion Week? I didn't even know we had one! or
2 - I know! So exciting! (Undoubtedly the one I prefer)
Ottawa, although the nation's capital, it is by no means famous for being a fashion capital. When we think fashion we think Paris, Rome, London and New York. Well, slowly but surely Ottawa is making its way on to the map.
In the past few years it seems that 'fashion' has become very de rigeur and many variations of 'fashion week' have come and gone. Ottawa Fashion Week (OFW) has endured however, and this upcoming fall showing promises a good one!
The new venue - the National Art Gallery steps things up a level. With such a magnificent back drop of glass, all of the models and the clothing are guaranteed to shine brighter than years past. The reformatted schedule (3 nights vs 4 October 29, 20 and 31) means a tougher qualification process and more competition to get a spot in the line up. Not to despair, the schedule is a great mix of local and national talent. Many new designers have signed on including Label, Elroy Designs, and Moda Suite. Better yet, some of our favourites are back to wow us again. I am seriously looking forward to Kania, Rachel Sin and Jessica Biffffffyyyyyyyyyyy!
For more information check out the website: ottawafashionweek.ca, or stay tuned. And stay tuned as we promise to bring you all the latest updates!

Montreal comes to Ottawa

A scarf for all seasons:
When you mention a scarf what first comes to mind is a warm, wooly necessity for the wicked wind of winter. Not anymore! There are so many fantastic fabric options; there is a perfect scarf for anytime of the year. During the summer, lightweight jersey and cotton scarves are great for cooler mornings and even colder air conditioned spaces. They take up so little room and are such a tremendous life saver. Moving into cooler weather, options abound! Scarves range from traditional wool gifts from grandma, to pashminas, to fashionable finishes, to elegant ensembles!
Scarves for your outerwear:
Select something that works well with your coat. You need not worry about what outfit you are wearing underneath as you will remove your scarf when you arrive at your destination.
Pick a COLOUR. Your scarf is the closest thing to your face. A pop of colour can be as effective as an extra few hours of sleep. Beige may be safe but it makes everyone look like they have the flu!
Scarves indoors:
This is the fun part! Typically a scarf you wear inside will be less bulky/ large and a lighter weight than your outdoor scarf. After all, it is not designed to help protect you from the elements. Rather, this piece should compliment your outfit. It can be that finishing touch that pulls your look together!
With so many fantastic options available, now is the perfect time to fall in love. Not sure where to start? Come visit us this Saturday October 2 from 12 – 5. We will have Ali the stylist on location to help you pick from scarves of all shapes and sizes. We’ll get the perfect one for you!

Angie Says: I am one of the types that dress to specific fashion rules as you
know Ali. And right now with a change in season there are many that I question while trying to be stylish. Can i still wear sandals? When do I need tights with a dress? What kind of outer wear should i be using? Do we move to dark handbags? I love the jean jacket, but can you do it with jeans? Does your scarf have to match your outift, or coat? What do you think?
Ali Says: Yes the transition to fall continues to be confusing, but the balance has shifted and we are now getting more of the cool and less of the glorious warm.
First let’s discuss phasing out summer: Can you wear sandals? Yes, if when you leave the house it is warm and sunny and you will be home before the sun (and the temperature) goes down.
Dresses are still great but I highly recommend wearing them with tights which happen to be another of my favourite accessories.
Welcoming in fall: Yes! It’s coat season! I LOVE coats (yes I know, I love everything!). Coats are just so much fun. They say so much about where you are going and what you will be doing. This time of year popular picks are:
Trench Coat – this piece made its debut as a functional item during WWI. It has since become a classic because not only does it keep you warm and dry, it always looks so darned good!
Jean jackets are fantastic and iconic as well however they are just a little less easy to wear. Pair them up with anything other than denim in a similar colour.
Does your scarf have to match your coat? Yes! Does that mean it has to be exactly the same colour? No! Pick a colour that flatters your complexion as your scarf is the closest thing to your face. The guidelines for scarves are very flexible so just throw one on!

Flip flops or boots?
Angie Says:
Help Ali! I see people wearing flip flops still .... and the boots are already out. In fact, the stores are full of them. When and how are we supposed to be wearing boots? Should we be buying them, wearing them, or both?
Ali Says:
The shoulder season (the transition from fall to winter) creates wardrobe challenges for even the savviest fashionista. Take a look out the window for proof that no one is really sure exactly what to wear at this time of year. Today’s debate: flip flops vs fall boots. I’d say they are both okay. Depending on the day, depending on your look, the unpredictable weather means you can go with whichever you prefer. Here’s how:
First let me reiterate that we are not talking about one dollar rubber shower shoes one picks up at the discount store. Rather, we are referring to actual footwear that has a flat sole and a narrow strap typically between your big toe and the rest of your toes.
At this time of year the clock is running out on days that one can actually get away with wearing flip flops (or open toed shoes of any kind). Soon it will simply be too cold. Avoid wearing them with shorts and skirts as you run the risk of looking over exposed (or feeling overexposed which leads to goose bumpy skin which is never in style!). If you aren’t ready to let go, make sure you balance your ‘skimpy’ shoes with warmer layers on top. Think jeans and a long sleeve top with possibly a pashmina.
Boots are one of my FAVOURITE things to collect. Leather, suede, tall short, black, brown, beige, green navy, I cannot seem to get enough and I feel no need to justify! A great pair of boots is always in style. That being said, it’s tough to make a pair of boots work during the hot summer months. Now that the temperature is markedly cooler it’s open season to bust out your boots and get struttin! Take my advice from above and do the opposite. Temper your excitement by pairing your ‘heavy’ boots with something lighter on top. Boots look awesome with dresses (in denim, or knit as opposed to a cotton sundress), capris, or even shorts (in heavier fabrics like wool). Even though our winter season can seem too insufferably long, I always take solace in the fact that we have the perfect excuse to buy more and wear more boots. Game on!!

White after Labour Day?
The origins of this ‘Rule’ are unknown and even if we did know where it began, I am not one to promote ‘Rules’ when it comes to dressing. Rather, I am a believer in promoting guidelines. So, when it comes to this question here are my thoughts:
The rule about white after Labour Day is a non-issue if you live in a hot climate. Crisp white cotton and linen clothing look fantastic in brilliant sunshine. There is something airy and glamourous about dressing head to toe in white. It evokes thoughts of beachy afternoons and looks marvelous as a sharp contrast to yachts sailing in deep indigo or turquoise waters.
The same is not so true here in the North on a blustery afternoon when winds are whipping and leaves are blowing all around. After Labour Day, there is normally a distinct change in the weather: days are warm but evenings are markedly cooler. The weather at the start of the day is no indication of what is in store for the day to come. Risking white pants or dress when a dark downpour is never too far off the horizon is high stakes not worth the return.
This is not to say you should banish white all together. Well that is exactly what it is to say: you should banish white all together. White from head to toe is too much. The hours of daylight are getting shorter minute by precious minute, and the leaves already beginning to change colour. An all white outfit looks off and out of place. One should aim to have their clothing be complemented by our surroundings/ backdrop. Warmer tones are a safer choice with the cooling temperatures.
White shoes and bags can be traded out for camel, toffee and chocolate. Crisp white t-shirts, pants or even dresses however can still be worn. After all it is still hot out there. Just opt to pair white with darker tones like plum, navy, olive or brown. Use gold and bronze accessories to smooth the transition. Your aim should be to downplay the brightness of the white and balance it with cues from seasonal colours like my personal favourite burnt orange!

Our firend Katarina was able to come and help us and do photos for the event, so I thought I would share her view of the event and great photos with you. We LoveK.
CHERRY PIE GOODNESS
Thursday, August 12, 2010
It’s the second week of August and the weather is still fantastic; sunny and hot just the way it should be. Now more than ever we savour every ray because as much as we would love to deny it, fall is on its way. But that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. End of vacation or back to school sounds like bad news but it comes with a super sparkly silver lining: NEW CLOTHES.
Don’t get me wrong. Just because every mall in the city and every ad on tv would like you to believe that back-to-school requires the purchase of an entirely new wardrobe, that is not necessarily the case. The drop in temperature simply means a change in the way you put your pieces together. Use these tips to help you stylishly make the transition from summer to fall:
Mix and Match and use Layers
September can be a warm and sunny glorious month but not in the steamy way it was in July. Mornings are crisp and the evening chill comes early. Play both sides. Pick one piece from each season. So, either pair a long sleeve top with a pair of shorts/capris or a cute sleeveless top with pants or jeans.
Maxi dresses are great just use a fitted jean jacket or cardi to give you a little more coverage and you’ll achieve a harmonious balance of summer and fall.
Leggings and tights can maximize your minis and your dresses. Make sure to pick a patterned pair (not a pickled pepper) for a true fashion statement.
Footwear is another easy way to make the shift. Open toed shoes and flip flops (all except the rubber ones from the dollar store) are acceptable for the transition. It’s always fun to pick up one more pair (now that they are all on sale) in a darker colour likebrown, grey or wine. These will take you through until your frost hits. Alternatively, soft leather boots look fantastic with a dress. This look is not just for country signers anymore!
Colour
Making different colour choices is the simplest way to jumpstart your look for the next season. In the weeks to come, slowly retire your hot pinks, yellows, greens and bright blues that shone so gloriously in the sun. People in the
Scarves
Last but not least, I have to reiterate my love for scarves. I have been a long time fan but now more than ever there are SO many to choose from I just can’t get enough. This is the one piece you can go to in all situations. It’s both an elegant fashion piece and practical for warmth. Not to mention, a scarf gets along with every other item in your wardrobe. It works with coats, tank tops, sweaters and dresses. Can any other piece of clothing say that?
The next few weeks will be packed with all the activities we sadly won’t be able to do once the colder weather hits; Barbeques, picnics at the park, splashing in the pool. But this year summer has been very good to us. We cannot complain. What we can do, is eagerly await the arrival of sweater weather and all the goodies that come along with it! Coats, sweaters, shoes, boots, jeans, trousers…

The one piece of clothing that is always just right? A dress!
When the weather heats up, a dress is always the first item of clothing that I turn to. There is something inexplicable about how special you feel as soon as you slip into a dress; not even necessarily a formal one. No, any day and any occasion a dress is the right choice. Here are our thoughts on this season ...

Although black and white is a classic staple that will never go wrong, this season the focus is on colour. Jewel tones like sapphire blue, emerald green and ruby red are hot in addition to strong saturated yellows. My personal fav –coral. It flatters every skin type. Check out this fabulous frock by Jacob .
If you prefer something softer, garden prints are everywhere and offer a smaller more feminine option for those days you are feeling so bold. H&M had a wildly popular Garden Collection for spring. Other stores like the reliably trendy Forever 21 also featuring some lovely floral dresses.
Ruffles were a trend that started a few seasons ago but have great staying power. There is something flirty and fun about ruffles. This adorable dress by BCBG has just enough ruffles without creating a strange lampshade effect. We are loving this dress for its second super trend feature: one shoulder.
With the cast of Sex and the City 2 visiting exotic Middle East, we are seeing other 'musts' for this season. Embellishments - from beads to zippers to bedazzles everywhere, jeweled necklines are key. Can't find the exact one for you? Fake it! Pair a simple strapless dress with a necklace like this one and voila!
Last but not least, my long lasting favourite - the maxi dress. They are so comfy and elegant and every woman should own one, or more! You don't have to be over size feet tall to work this look. Make sure the hem just grazes the floor and you'll be the height of fashion. Now that these have become a staying piece, you can get them in all shapes, sizes and even better, something to fit all budgets. Check out this great one!
It's summer! You don't have time to be sweating over clothing choices. Make sure your summer wardrobe is a simple thing. Build a base of great dresses and then use shoes and accessories to change your look. You can't go wrong with a single piece of clothing that can have you dressed and out the door and in the sun in a few seconds flat!

Oh what a night!
The first Sex and the City movie, was insightful, emotional and fashionably fantastic. We were all left wanting more. With the long awaited release of the second film, women everywhere flocked to the theaters to get their fix. Starfish events, put together the perfect soiree for the movie screening complete with a silent auction with great prizes (oh how we all wanted to MAC cosmetics gift box), delicious food by a new restaurant called the Burrito Borracho (doesn't sound stylish but it was truly delish!), great
original designer pieces by Ottawa's own Rachel Sin. It was apparent that we had all taken extra time to get ready for our evening. Fabulous fashionista's with their hottest looks lined up early to get the best seats for the show. Many were fierce competitors in the 'Best Shoe' contest. The film garnered mixed reviews but there is no debating the fantastical fashion quotient. Even better is that it is rumoured they are already working on a third film. Can't wait! The after-party at the Arc Hotel is always a best bet for a great night out. The crowd came directly from the theater so it was 98% female. A jackpot for any lucky boys who happened to be at the lounge! For us girls it was like a grown up birthday party as we danced the night away. The pretty shoes may have been pretty painful but totally worth it.
We are already looking forward to the next time!
